Earthmate PN-40; When and How Much?

August 18, 2008

UPDATE: PN-40 Available for Pre-Order

There have been lots of requests for dates and prices on the new Earthmate PN-40, so let me share what I’ve got…

Targeted release date: October 15th

We’ve been in beta for the past five weeks with members of the testing team reporting in from all over the country. They’ve been doing an outstanding job working together to conduct a thorough test of the PN-40. We have been adding their feedback to our project plan and are on schedule for a fall delivery.

Targeted retail price: $399.95

Remember everything that comes in the box… the Earthmate PN-40, the Topo USA 7.0 software ($99.95 value), and the sample data download from the DeLorme Map Library ($40.00 value). For those who want more maps for their Earthmate PN-40, the new $29.95 annual Map Library subscription gives you unlimited access to USGS 7.5 minute quads, color aerial imagery, and NOAA nautical charts.

So these are the dates and prices as I know them to be right now. We’ve got two more beta releases scheduled and are committed to releasing a quality device that will perform well for our customers. Keep an eye on this blog for updates about the Earthmate PN-40 schedule.

Thank you,

DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 in action!

August 15, 2008

Okay folks, I’ve gotten lots of requests and a few taunts from people looking to see the Earthmate PN-40 in action… “Show us the maps,” “Is it really that fast,” “How’s the tri-axial compass compare,”… well, I kept writing replies trying to describe the new device and I realized that a picture’s worth a thousand words and a video is priceless!

Here you go; I’ve attached links to three videos I put together while playing hooky from work the other day.

DISCLAIMER: The following videos were not produced by our marketing group, I just wanted to share some pre-release info… DeLorme will not be held liable if my shaky-cam filming makes you sea-sick or my narration puts you to sleep. Please use caution while viewing these clips!

The first video was taken at our camp; it shows color aerial imagery and USGS quad data, two of the many datasets that can be viewed with the PN-Series devices.

The second video is a quick clip of our new Hybrid Map view that is available with the PN-Series and Topo USA, it also does a nice job of showing the fast map redraws.

The third video is a collection of clips from our geocaching hunt… I led my family on a five cache trip and talked a little about the new tri-axial compass and the DeLorme MapLibrary annual subscription.

Check back often, I’m planning a few other video clips to show off the performance of the Earthmate PN-40.

PN-40 at Outdoor Retailer Show

August 14, 2008

The DeLorme sales team was at the 2008 Outdoor Retailer (OR) Summer Market Show this past week. Tom, Jim, Dave, and I enjoyed 6 great days out in Salt Lake City. We had excellent weather and made the best of  it by getting out for a few mountain bike rides in the Park City area . (See my crash video below!)

The show itself has 2 days of the Open Air Demo at Pineview Reservoir in Ogden, UT, about an hour north of SLC. The focus there is on the paddlesports vendors, but it?s a great opportunity to play with GPS devices, seeing as how the rest of the show is held indoors at the Salt Palace. Lots of people came to the DeLorme booth, undoubtedly drawn in by our ‘Serious Tool’  t -shirts and stickers, and all were excited to get a chance to see the PN-40 in action.

Back at the Salt Palace for the second half of the show we made a bit of a splash with a presentation at our booth on Saturday by polar explorer John Huston, who has been a fan of the PN-20 and will be taking the PN-40 with him on his next expedition to the North Pole in March of ?09. He and his partner Tyler Fish will be attempting to be the first Americans to reach the pole unsupported, using skis as form of transport. More on John and the expedition at http://www.northpole09.com.

Overall the show was a great time and a great success for DeLorme.
