Well … not so blazing fast on getting it into people’s hands. A confluence of events has put me off recommending the PN-40 to my outdoor customers.
We had an in-store demo and I liked the unit. Our store has not received a unit but it is offered in our catalog. I called and left a message with our DeLorme account rep two weeks ago regarding making a personal purchase and never received a call back.
So, I ordered the unit from a major competitor who took 5 days just to get it to UPS even though they claimed they had it in stock. Now UPS is having trouble delivering it to me because I requested a certain delivery day after their first attempt and now UPS claims that the request entered the system too late; even though they left a second notice saying they would deliver the package the day I requested.
As I said, it really is a confluence of events but I cannot subject my customers to the same frustrating experience since my store currently offers the unit only through its catalog. All-in-all; I have lost interest in the product amid DeLorme’s hype.

Moose Drool: Sorry to hear that you got off to a rough start with your PN-40 purchase. While I’m not sure who you contacted, I know that our account reps have been swamped with travel these past weeks, visiting stores like yours and training people on all the new features available in the PN-40.
Hopefully UPS has delivered your package by now and you’re outside looking at some high resolution aerial imagery of your favorite hiking trail.
Hopefully you’ll feel differently once you’ve tried the device out. I know a customer that orders through our normal channels or through your store will not risk miscommunication through voice mail. I think you might also recognize that DeLorme does not have much control over UPS delivery schedules and really shouldn’t be penalized for their delay.
Drop me a note and let me know if your experience has changed at all since receiving the device. I hate to think that you lost interest before you even tried the PN-40 out. We’ve worked very hard to deliver an exciting set of features and I’d like to hear what you think of the device as well as the shipping process.
Thank you for your comment,
Chip Noble

To whom it may concern,
I would like to know whether you would reccommend this GPS PN 40 or the Eastern Copy CD of topos. I have a rather extensive collection of Topos already. However just moving to SC from Md, I don’t have any for the surrounding states. I do a lot of hiking , hunting into remote areas utilizing a GPS .
Thank You,
Don

Don: if you purchase the PN-40 or PN-20 we include the full U.S. version of Topo USA 7.0 (a $99.95 value alone) so this is a great deal we offer to make it easy for more people to have full U.S. map coverage so they don’t have to worry when they want it later.

Just a quick note. I have a PN-20, and am considering an upgrade to the PN-40. Is it worth it?
Also, saw your full page ad in the March 2009 Backpacker Magazine. Big mistake to use a background photo of a snowmobiler in that magazine. Many backpackers are not real impressed with snowmobilers…FYI.
