Important Product Release News

The SPOT Communicator for the new DeLorme PN-60w has been delayed until early July. We apologize for this delay, which is entirely due to one component shortage. We are working aggressively to resolve that shortage situation now. This shortage was unexpected and driven by the difficulties facing many suppliers attempting to ramp up production to meet rising demand following the recession.

Customers will be able to purchase the new DeLorme PN-60 model with Topo North America 9.0 software and maps included (the PN-60 is the next-gen of the PN-40 with vastly improved memory and battery performance plus much more, available in red) in mid-June from any number of DeLorme resellers, but need to understand this particular model will not work with the SPOT Communicator when it becomes available in early July.

The PN-60w model with the new SPOT Communicator included will be available for preordering in June from resellers and also from DeLorme. As a reminder, this will be the world’s first handheld GPS that enables typing and transmitting one-way short text messages using the SPOT satellite system when outside cellular coverage. Those of us at DeLorme and SPOT are very excited by what we are seeing in the test phase of this new product combination and are confident it will revolutionize customers’ experiences using GPS and satellite text communications for years to come.

We thank you for your patience and understanding. Please check our blog for the latest news as we move forward.

  1. Randy says:

I just preordered mine from cascade gps and they were told they would ship May 24th. There are other retailers saying the same thing.
    Thanks

  2. RobG says:

Bummer about the shortage, but for ME personally, it’s a good thing… gives me time to come up with the $$ to pre-order. BTW will the PN60SEw be pre-orderable in June too?

  3. Caleb Mason says:

Concerning the SEs…last I saw it looks like they will be coming to us in mid-June so we are discussing how to let existing DeLorme PN-40 SE customers buy one of those and then get the SPOT Communicator in July with some sort of good savings on both models when bought together in June from DeLorme (like save $100 in total).

This way you can be assured of starting to use the PN-60w SE by itself and then also go to the front of the line for the SPOT hardware when it arrives. One thing to keep in mind about these SEs versus the PN-40 SEs — these will have 16GB of internal memory, compared to the regular PN-60 models which will be 3.5 GB. That will be nice to have. Anyway, once we figure out what we can do to take preorders for people who want an SE model direct from DeLorme and then a SPOT Communicator once they become available, also direct from us, we will post here. Just a reminder — the SE models are limited select editions and are only offered direct from DeLorme. Sourcing that 16 GB memory has already been challenging but we have some in stock to get us started at least.

One final thought — we are hearing about a lot of component shortages across tech products right now so we are not alone but are fighting with many suppliers to meet our delivery requirements. Never fails — too much inventory — recession approaching; too little inventory, recession over. Round and round we go.

Thanks to you all for your patience — we are reallly liking what we are seeing with the new devices during testing. For instance, we are seeing e-lithium battery times of 30 hours without power management in usage. Probably be 50 hours with power savings mode enabled. We will be shipping all units with Energizer Lithium Ultimates — but even the regular alkalines are seeing around 18 hours under typical conditions. Whole new power architecture looking very good. Plus the new UI, activity settings, profiling, paperless geocaching, Canada topos — and that’s all before the new fun SPOT is bringing to the table for us. Chip was out and about after 1 am last night sending the new “Type & Send” text messages keeping his neighbors up with his excitement!

  4. Ray says:

Do I read this correctly that only owners of the PN-40SE will have the option to pre-order the PN-60SE and participate in the savings when ordering the SPOT for later delivery? What about the owners of the PN-40 regular who want to get the 60SE and Spot? Will they have to pay the full price? Seems a bit unfair if you ask me.

    • Caleb Mason says:

Sorry Ray — missed your post. I just learned that we have to wait for final FCC certification on the SPOT Communicator before we can offer it for sale, so this has complicated our plan. Just so you know, the house that does the certification has passed it so we are waiting for the FCC to provide the official paperwork approval, which could be anywhere from next week to the week after most likely.

Given this new hurdle, our plan is to let people sign up next week online– probably Wednesday —to be notified so when it can go on sale you can be at the head of the line and we can ship the SE GPS model in June and the SPOT model in late July as planned.

There is always something — but check our site next Wednesday and look for a Notify Me sign-up list and get your name in there. For all I know, the FCC could come in on Monday so it is very fliud. Everything else is ready to go.

I appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience. This blog is giving you a view behind the curtain that would not be possible at a public company so please don’t shoot the messenger — that would be me!

  5. cread says:

Will the PN-60wSE be offered without a SPOT (or more accurately without a need to buy one)?
Also as a PN-40 owner am interested in pre-ordering, but did not buy a PN-40SE (and of course now want the SE memory 8^).
Any Word on pricing on Direct from Delorme products?

  6. Caleb Mason says:

We still need to coordinate our direct SE sales plans with the number of units we receive by when, but the current plan will be to have a direct sales offer for the SE model with SPOT and on day one of selling we will contact via email the current PN-40 SE owners and then on day two and three the PN-40 owners.

We will also offer the SEs for sale without SPOT and will have some sort of intro offer for existing PN SE and regular model owners as well.

Hope this helps….will post more here when we know more but the main variable at this time is parts procurement given the unanticipated shortages we and others are facing at present.

    – Caleb

  7. gasport says:

How do you know who owns a PN-40 if they purchased it from a source other than Delorme?

  8. Glenn T says:

I was interested in the PN60w without the SPOT Tracker. I liked the features of the PN60w but don’t have a need for the tracker. So I was wondering if this delay effects the PN60w w/o the SPOT, is the delay for the tracker or the wireless part of PN60.

  9. Caleb Mason says:

The PN-60 (red model) will be shipping in mid-June. If you do not want SPOT there is no need to buy the PN60w model as the wireless (w) in that model is only used for connecting with SPOT. However, if you want more memory, the PN-60w SE model includes 16 GB of internal memory and will be sold directly from DeLorme in June as well. Hope that answers your question and thanks for asking.

    – Caleb

    • John says:

      Caleb,

I thought the PN60w was also about to poll other PN60w’s so they show on the maps without having to have SPOT. Is that correct? Like Glenn, I have no need for SPOT but would like to see my friends on the map.

      John

  10. RobG says:

Will the PN-60 come in any color other than red? I seem to recall seeing it in gray a few months back. I would prefer a more subdued color, personally. :)

  11. Glenn T says:

Thank you Caleb for answering my previous question quickly, I was interested in the PN-60w for the future Wireless Mesh feature that was announced for fall release. Also I liked the Camo version [:D] I saw on Cascade.com.

  12. Bob Haas says:

    Dear sirs,

Enjoyed reading the above comments about the PN-60w with spot. At present I am inclined to think that my needs would be filled if I were to purchase the PN-60w without spot. That way I would be able to upgrade to spot if the need arose. I realize that a discount is offered if both the PN-69w and spot are purchased at the same time, but I am willing to forgo that option. So…my question is when will I be able to purchase the PN-60 without spot??
    Thank you, BOB H.

  13. Caleb Mason says:

    Hi Bob and others,

One of the reasons we use this blog to make posts is to help us formulate better plans so I have just this morning set our wheels in motion to offer the PN-60 SE, the PN-60w, and the SPOT Communicator for sale on our Web site by themselves.

This will allow those who want to try the PN-60w or wSE models first and then consider SPOT later the option to do so.

But to be clear — we will only be offering savings (see below) at launch to those who purchase the SE model and SPOT together because we cannot offer specials on the other two models as most of that inventory will be heading straight to retailers as the scramble for inventory unfolds.

I think our pricing will look like this for people who choose to buy direct from DeLorme at launch (subject to change):

A la carte shopping (no savings):

    1) PN-60 by itself, red color only, next-gen to the PN-40: $399.95 — available at retail or DeLorme
    2) PN-60w by itself (no SPOT), black only, same as above model but with wireless 802 dot interface to the SPOT Communicator and future wireless networking specs still TBD in terms of range; $449.95 without SPOT — available from DeLorme only
    3) SPOT Communicator: $149.95 (plus SPOT annual subscription) — available from DeLorme only
    4) PN-60w SE, same as number two above but with 16 GB internal memory versus 3.5GB on other 60-lineup models): $549.95 — avalable direct from DeLorme only (e.g., $100 more for the extra memory)

    DeLorme/SPOT Bundle Savings:

    1) PN-60w with SPOT: $549.95 — save $50 for buying at same time versus a la carte (retail and direct from DeLorme item)

    2) PN-60w SE with SPOT Communicator: $649.95 — save $50 versus buying a la carte — but also save an additional $100 when you buy both at launch with a split delivery provided, SPOT coming later: $549.95. So this is the hot deal direct rom DeLorme as you get the SE extra memory, which is not available at retail, plus the SPOT Communicator, for the same price as the wSE model alone.

Clear? Cloudy? Mostly cloudy with widespread sun?

    • John says:

Is there a way to sign up early for the PN-60w SE?

    • kurt says:

When will they be available on the website to order?

I was hoping for both to take to Philmont, but could live with the split-delivery (though I just know the SPOT messenger will arrive while I’m there – 7/2-7/13).

      Thanks!

    • Tom says:

It sounds great! How soon can we order the SE (with split delivery of SPOT)? I am super anxious :)

    • Caleb Mason says:

Tom: we expect to start taking orders for the split SE/SPOT bundle offer Tuesday of next week for SE shipping soon thereafter and SPOT in July. Thanks for your interest.

    • Tom says:

One week! I have my Credit Card ready….BTW (for what it is worth) – the above referenced ‘promo’ to save $100 bucks off the SE+SPOT (with later SPOT delivery) is what sealed the deal on my deciding on the SE w/SPOT vs. the base (non-spot/W) unit. Was on the wall about the SPOT investment and can’t wait until end of July for a base unit but this offer puts it over the top for me and gets me the device when I need it (and the SE on top of that). Very excited. Thanks!

  14. Travis says:

So i just got a notification from Amazon that this is delayed AGAIN until August 4th. What gives? Now I’m not going to have the unit for the majority of the summer. When I originally pre-ordered it I thought i would have had it by NOW.

I have to say I’m a bit miffed.

  15. Caleb Mason says:

Travis: I am not at all sure why they are posting such a late date but probably just to be safe. If you have an order in with them, I really would expect you’ll see it in July and not August based on all the latest information we have here.

  16. Travis says:

Thank you Caleb. I hope you are right.

  17. Jackie Moore says:

Has TOPO 9 and the 2.8 Firmware been delayed also?

  18. Caleb Mason says:

Jackie — they are on schedule for mid-June. Thanks for asking.

    • Lee says:

I enjoyed the beta test video. After review, looks as though the SPOT has a SOS button on the side that could work independent of the PN-60w, if need be. If that is true is there any other features on the side of the SPOT, i.e. an okay button? Also was DeLorme able to develop a Bureau of Land Management lands map that functions well on the PN-60w screen? If so, could I see a photo of the screen with Bureau of Land Management lands screen on a PN.
      Lee

  19. Tracy says:

When will the PN-60w without the spot be released?

    • Caleb Mason says:

Tracy — the PN60w black 3.5 GB model will only be sold with SPOT at launch to avoid customer confusion. This is the primaray retail product that will be in stores, along with our red GPS that is exactly the same but without the wireless needed to pair with our new SPOT Communicator.

DeLorme will begin offering the PN-60w SE 16-GB model in small qtys direct from us starting in mid-June by itself or as a split shipment option with SPOT (GPS in June/SPOT follows in July) and if you look above at a previous post of mine we are planning a great offer on the two when bought together to encourage people who want the SE model with more memory to also get SPOT. That config will be the “ultimate” set-up for power users.

Hope this helps — we will update as everything plays out. Thanks for your interest and check out Chip’s video blog post if you have not seen it.

  20. Lee says:

    Caleb,
I am excited by seeing some of the beta tests. I live in Idaho and use a SPOT & GPS unit with public land status. When the the new PN-60w SPOT communicator comes out, will I be able to use the SPOT communicator with basic stand alone functions without texting and having the PN-60w present? At times when trail running, I prefer not to carry a GPS unit, just the SPOT communicator. Second question I would like to see photo how the screen looks shows “Bureau of Land Management lands” on a PN-60?
    Lee

  21. Tom Mulvihill says:

Can I find list of the PN-60′s specs somewhere so I can decide between the various units you offer?

    • Caleb Mason says:

Our Web site should be updated the middle of next week and there will be a comparison chart of all models at that time. Hope you can wait until then — thanks.

  22. Ray says:

How do we get notified that we can purchase at the discount.. PN-60 and Spot package.

    • Ray says:

Caleb, still waiting a reply. Or should I assume that I just call next week and will be able to order the PN-60 and Spot at the discount price?

      Thanks….

  23. I’m STILL waiting for the PN60 from Amazon. They estimated a June11th shipping date until today when they said the were revising the delivery date and would let me know.

    This is RIDICULOUS.

Can I get a speedier delivery from you or another supplier so that I can cancel the Amazon order.

    • Caleb Mason says:

Caroline: this is not Amazon’s problem — it is ours. But we are expecting to ship PN-60s to retailers starting late next week so I would hope they could fill your order within the next two weeks.

The unit is looking really great with amazing battery life times of as high as 30 hours running the included e-lithium AAs and also with a lot more memory, a new UI, and other cool features. IN power savings mode, we are seeing 50-hour battery times.

It has been delayed due to component shortages in Asia, which are impacting the entire tech industry right now. We also run rigorous QA procedures so we took a little more time to get this thing as solid as humanly possible.

Thanks for your patience and I’ll post more as product comes in and ships out to retailers.

    • Brian says:

Maybe if they built them in AMERICA, we’d have them already!

    • Caleb Mason says:

Brian: we wish we could build them in the US as everything else is done here — all hardware and software engineering plus technical support. We continue to look for ways to make that happen.

  24. Well okay….Caleb. Considering I didn’t even know I WANTED a GPS until a week ago, I guess I can wait another two weeks. :)

One more question. Amazon’s listing was confusing about what comes with the PN60. Do I need to also order the city maps 2010 (I already did) and the Topo 9 too? (I didn’t order that one) but I also ordered the map subscription service.

My question is if any of the software that comes with the unit can only be used on the unit or can it also be loaded on a computer?

I need to have it on the computer as well in order to do a lot of bicycle route creations that I can save to jpg files for posting on our bike advocacy website for safe routes for beginner cyclists.

    Thanks, Caleb!
    Caroline

    • Caleb Mason says:

      Hi Caroline,

No nickle and diming here at DeLorme — we include our new Topo North America 9.0 software program with every PN model shipment, as well as five DVDs with all the North American data in the proper PN-series file format so all one needs to do is select the areas you want and copy to either the internal memory or an SD card.

One of the unique assets DeLorme owns and maintains is our North American map database, which includes topo maps with elevation contours but also detailed street maps and also four million places of interest — the usual stuff like gas, food, entertainment, shopping — but new in this version our paper atlas write-ups of natural features and family outings around the U.S. We also include new BLM lands for those who know what they are and want them.

Topo USA software (included) allows you two usages for PCs — so one could install on a desktop and a laptop for example, so you are all set there. The software includes the ability to convert a route or draw line into a GPS log file just by right-clicking that line object — it’s very powerful. You also can create automatic trail routes. You can bring your bike routes form the GPS back into the software and see elevation cutaways in 3D and also play back the GPS log file to relive the trip.

So for those who simply want to use the GPS without the software — all they do is load the maps and not even use Topo software. For those who want to do a lot more, use the software and go as deep as you want. It is deep — some have compared it to PhotoShop within the photo industry — so we give the customer the option. It is a tremendous amount of value with each device –the software sells for $99 by itself. BUt you do not need to buy it in addition to the Earthmate PN GPS.

Hope this helps and thanks for your interest.

  25. Craig says:

Just wanted to keep the pressure on and say I’m really looking forward to the PN-60. I’ve been tracking it since January. Though the 60w and spot features are alluring I don’t need them. The new features and improvements of the 60 alone make it the best GPS out there. I hope it delivers on the promises as I’ve reviewed every available GPS out there and the PN-60 looks like a very, very good choice. Topo 9 is also exciting as are the map / data improvements. Really hope it all ships and works starting late next week like you say.

    • Caleb Mason says:

Craig: Believe me, the pressure is on and has been on non-stop for several months with many people here working ’round the clock and on weekends. No one is probably looking forward to getting this complete more than those of us here! Thanks…it’s looking great.

  26. Hank30721 says:

    Any updates Caleb?

  27. Caleb Mason says:

Hank: PN-60s are coming in to our distribution center now so will be shipped to retailers all this week and should be shipping from retailers to customers next week.

The PN-60w SE model with SPOT is still held up while we await the FCC papers for SPOT to arrive but we know we passed the test so it’s just paperwork at this point.

  28. Mike says:

    Hi Caleb,
You and Chip have done a great job of sharing information and updates on the PN-60. I am, and I’m sure many others are, anxiously looking forward to ordering the PN-60WSE from DeLorme. Based on your latest update it sounds like it will only be made available for purchase after the FCC paperwork arrives. Guess I’ll have to keep checking the site regularly. Congratulations – you’re almost there!

    Thanks,
    Mike

    • Caleb Mason says:

Thanks, Mike — we really appreciate the positive feedback as we have been working like dogs here to make this project come to life with more employee passion, intelligence, and effort than I have ever been involved with here or elsewhere. With any luck, we will have a game-changer product release that will fire people up.

So the way things stand today (Tuesday) is as follows:

      1) Customers who want the 16-GB SE model from DeLorme with SPOT to follow later (as outlined in my post above) need to wait hopefully no more than two weeks from now and ideally before then, for us to be allowed to offer them for sale until the FCC paperwork for SPOT arrives. It’s just a formality at this point.

      2) The PN-60 red units are in now, with some lot checks taking place (where we pull a sample from each batch to run them through our tests) and then will begin shipping to retail stores tomorrow. These include the new Topo North America software with Canadian topos for the first time and the new easy Sync GPS feature — plus more.

We are still planning to launch our Web content tomorrow but very little will be orderable while we wait for the FCC clearance on SPOT. All the PN-60 red units are going to retail so none of those will be available from DeLorme this week or next but should be hitting store shelves.

I’ll keep you all posted. Thanks, again.

    • Tom says:

two more weeks! nooooo…Darn govt Bureaucracies holding up Delorme’s being able to start selling these bad boys and us consumers from spending…all over some paperwork!!!

  29. Matt65 says:

Hi Caleb — so how do we take advantage of this:

    2) PN-60w SE with SPOT Communicator: $649.95 — save $50 versus buying a la carte — but also save an additional $100 when you buy both at launch with a split delivery provided, SPOT coming later: $549.95. So this is the hot deal direct rom DeLorme as you get the SE extra memory, which is not available at retail, plus the SPOT Communicator, for the same price as the wSE model alone.

    • Caleb Mason says:

      Hi Matt:

Just complete the Notify Me sign-up box on the Web page for that product and we will contact you when we can after getting the FCC paperwork here.

As I write this the new site content is coming up in stages but should all be there very soon if not now.

    • Matt65 says:

Just a quick follow up. The website says the PN 60W SE is “now shipping” the folks in your sales department say “not in stock, not going to ship until July, not taking orders.”

Kinda curious as to what’s going on :-)

And congrats on getting all the information up on the website!

    • Caleb Mason says:

Hi Matt: I am not seeing anything that shows a PN-60 SE model being available now — it could be the way the updates roll out. Check again and let me know if you see it somewhere still. All I see are coming in July with a sign-up form. But once we get the FCC clearance we can take orders for the 60SE at that time and then ship the SPOT later in July.

    • Ray says:

      Caleb,

I went to the web site, but the link is not working. Is there any other way of signing up to get notification? I spent 10 hours yesterday trying to get an iPhone 4 and do not want to have that experience again…

Just let us know when the link to the page where we sign up.

      Thanks,

      Ray

    • Caleb Mason says:

Ray: the site is being bounced so pages are going out in sequences depending on what servers are being hit. This is the link you want:

      http://www.delorme.com/customerservice/default.aspx

If it is not available now just come back and try when it is working. Thanks.

    • Matt65 says:

      Caleb:

Sorry for the delayed response, I’m on the West Coast and had to go to the office. But when I got here, the site now says in big red letters “Coming in July. Sign up now to be notified when available”

So now I’ll just go to my Yahoo email account and keep hitting refresh :-)

PS I don’t know who I spoke w/ in Sales, but if you find out you might want to take him a cup of coffee or a danish or something. He seemed grumpy/surly/disinterested — but given the rave reviews I’ve read about Delorme customer service, and your going above and beyond w/ posting and responding to comments here, I’m assuming it was just a bad morning!

    • Caleb Mason says:

Matt: thanks for the feedback on your call experience, which we have shared with the call center group. They are typically excellent but possibly you caught someone at a bad moment (maybe a Celtic’s fan?). Anyway, I appreciate your passing that along and also realizing some days are better than others for all the individuals involved in running a business. I don’t think the problem is due to lack of food, however, based on what I saw there this morning. (Maybe bad coffee?)

  30. Jackie Moore says:

On the website under Topo North America 9.0 – PN-Series Edition>Whats New Tab >Topo North America features for the PN-Series GPS Devices there is this “» Much faster FIND on the PN-Series GPS Devices with firmware 1.3 update included”

What is this and is it a typo that was meant to say 2.8?

Also, is there any break for upgrading to 9.0 if you purchased recently as in the past?

Thanks in advance and we appreciate all of Delorme’s hard work and still taking time to answer customers questions 1 on 1. Try THAT with Bill Gates!!!

    • Caleb Mason says:

Jackie: the T-9 content is still being updated and you are correct about the firmware mis-statement. It will be fixed sometime today.

Reg users can get T-9 for $69.95 instead of $99.95 but I really hope many people will want to try a new GPS that includes the software with it.

I wish I were Bill Gates! Thanks for the comments though.

  31. Ray says:

Spoke too soon…. Same message as Apple…. Site offline….

I do not know whether more people want the PN-60SE with Spot but seems like the demand is there.

    • Ray says:

Sorry Caleb, I found the correct link in the last post you replied to me. Hopefully you can delete the just posted comment I made on the bad link.

I am signed up and, again, I have to state that you people are the greatest.

    • Caleb Mason says:

No problem Ray. I actually went and checked the sign-up box to make sure your name and others here were coming in and they are so it’s working as designed. I wish this launch were not complicated by the FCC hurdle but on we go and we will get there.

  32. Steven says:

I prefer the FCC than a having a King or a Dictator. I can wait, especially for a great product. But I’m getting a sense that Caleb and others are knocking our government. Let’s remember, “Initially, the highest quality [GPS] signal was reserved for military use, and the signal available for civilian use was intentionally degraded (“Selective Availability”, SA). This changed with U.S. President Bill Clinton ordering Selective Availability turned off at midnight May 1, 2000, improving the precision of civilian GPS from 300 meters (about 1000 feet) to 20 meters (about 65 feet).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System

    • Matt65 says:

      Steven:

I believe there is a broad spectrum between Bureaucracy (as championed by the FCC) and a Dictatorship and there is probably a choice somewhere in between that others might prefer.

As for Caleb and Delorme, I have seen no indication that they are knocking our government and have yet to see them make any political commentary. I believe they are eager to bring a new product to market especially since they believe that it is a “game changer.” Assuming Caleb’s status regarding the FCC is accurate, that the testing is complete and all that is needed is an appropriate signature, then I can understand this frustration. Who wants to wait for someone to get around to signing a peace of paper just so you can launch an exciting new project that many of your customers are clamoring for?

      Matt

    • Tom says:

And it isn’t like they haven’t already passed the tests. All we are talking about here is paperwork that is holding up a business trying to launch a new product and make some money (After they already passed the official tests)! It is okay though, I am sure the FCC is super swamped by the thousands of businesses out there investing in R&D and innovation in this strong economy launching new products and taking advantage of that strong consumer spending.

Seriously though, I appreciate Delorme’s candid feedback about the status and I don’t have the impression they are blaming anyone. It is what it is whether everyone likes it or not (and there is certainly nothing wrong with being frustrated over it – we don’t want to settle for mediocrity, that is why we want a Delorme unit!!)….

I am hanging in there as long as I can hoping I can get an SE before a trip where I plan to buy something before I go…

Need an edit button to correct “peace” to “piece” of paper… but I’m sure you get my point.

Thanks, Matt. Steven– I certainly hope I did not say anything above that was denigrating the importance of getting the final FCC certification as I certainly did not mean to if I did (I don’t have time right now to go read everything I’ve written given other pressing matters). But please know that all the tests we conduct are critically important and taken very seriously. Hopefully just a miscommmunication somewhere above but not a problem for me — let’s just get the new products out the door, which is today’s task among others. Thanks.

Just got email frm retailer: receipt of pn-60 was due on 6/21 and has been delayed by mfr to 6/28. So much for having it for my 4th of July activities.

Are they shipping? Is this an allocation issue?

    Dan

    • Wolfgang Stiller says:

I didn’t want to pre-order the PN-60 since when I have done this before and chosen the wrong retailer, I wound up waiting weeks while others got their products. Today I have confirmation that it is in stock so I ordered and received notice that my package is in the mail going out today.

Apparently the PN-60 *has* shipped to retailers.

      -Wolfgang

    • Caleb Mason says:

Dan: we have been shipping PN-60s to all retailers so you should be set soon. It could be they sold out of those in line before you. Who did you order from?

I bought the findmespot.com with high expectations. But it takes
20 minutes to instigate a response. For general GPS site location
it’s terrific! It seems Most people want to be on the move and move with their signals.

I’m wondering if you can include a clip eye on the device that i
can then loop into a caribeaner or someother attachment? I thought
that would be more effective than only a belt hook. Both may be
    desirable.

I look forward to this new edition! This is the kind of low tech
but effective devices I would like to invest. I think the opportunity for an activities insurance policy as you have designated is fantastik.
This could be a most popular investment idea.

It’s been just about 2 weeks since the last update on the PN-60wSE. Still waiting on the FCC? Do they post the approval on their site (like they do for licenses and the ULS)? My PN-40 is having some issues and REALLY would like the 60wSE to fill in. (Sorry for the squeaky wheel post, but I am hoping for more than grease 8^).
    Thanks.
PS: I will be unable to order next week, if they become available then, would I miss the boat on the early bird 2 part discount?

    • Caleb Mason says:

We are still awaiting the official certification. We just heard this morning that it is possible it will be in later this week but until we hear for sure we just have to wait.

I’ll post here as soon as I know and also expect you’ll be able to get the PN-60w SE unit you want for the special price even if it is the week after next.

Thanks for hanging in there with us.

    • Matt65 says:

But Caleb… I’m not very good at waiting :-)

I have you will have enough on hand to meet demand quickly. I’m doing my first mountain climb (Mt. Adams in WA) on August 2 & 3 w/ the American Lung Association’s Reach the Summit program (fund-raising program) and would love to be able to use this to provide all my donors w/ status updates as I ascend! But now I’m getting nervous that I’ll even have it in time to use it for August.

    Hi Matt and others,

In a conference call with the SPOT technical people yesterday they told us they have been told to expect FCC cert “no later than Tuesday.” So we are hoping to begin taking orders for the SE with delayed SPOT delivery special offer next week. I will post here as soon as we get it so you can call in — hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Thanks for your patience and I am sharing with you the latest information we have.

    • Matt65 says:

Thanks Caleb. I really appreciate all the information you’ve provided.

Still nervous about being able to receive the SPOT in time for the climb, but I suppose I’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Have a happy and safe 4th!

      Matt

    • Hank30721 says:

      Thanx Caleb!!!

    • Matt65 says:

Caleb – just wondering (like many others, I assume) if SPOT received FCC cert yesterday or if there has been a delay.

      Thanks.

      Matt

    • Hank30721 says:

      Hey Mr. Caleb…
      Any news?

    • Matt65 says:

      Hank:

Caleb’s latest from a couple of days ago on the forum (in brief told by SPOT last friday they would have cert by yesterday at the latest, no news since).

No need to call in to check about your sign up as you should be fine. I will post in this forum as soon as we get the FCC clearance from SPOT as a backup notifying people of when we will be sending the email offers with the special savings links embedded. You can choose to either click that email when you get it or phone us at 800-561-5105 at that time and we will confirm eligibilities. Thanks for your patience. I rec’d an email from the SPOT people late Friday who had just been in touch with the FCC testing lab and they said this particular device has many tests to undergo before it can be approved (given it is both a GPS and a Satellite Communicator) but said they “expected no later than this Wednesday and quite possibly before.”

Can’t wait for the PN60w SE w/Spot combo, was hoping to have it for my Zion hike this coming weekend, but I understand product delays…thanks for keeping us informed!!

  39. Hank30721 says:

    Waiting with bated breath!!!!

  40. Matt65 says:

For any of you who may not visit the Delorme forums, I am pasting Caleb’s latest update:

“Still waiting for the SPOT FCC go-ahead. We were told we should have had it yesterday so it is very close but still not with us. As soon as it is we will be contacting those who signed up to be notified for the special PN-60 w SE model with SPOT (to follow later) offer. I’ll let everyone know as soon as we know.”

  41. Jeff M says:

So, I’ve read through the above blog and maybe I missed this, but if I want to purchase the PN-60w SE *without* SPOT, can I do that now (now = July 10)? If so, how? If not, when? I would really like to have this in hand ASAP, as we are backpacking in early August and I want to familiarize myself with the unit ahead of time. Thanks!

BTW, as a potential I really appreciate your candor in this blog.

  42. Mark Benson says:

Thank you to everyone at ‘team’ Delorme! I just ordered my 60wSE and wanted to thank everyone for all the hard work it took to bring this product to market asap :O)
