Toby and David, two self-proclaimed “run-of-the mill Texans” have accomplished an anything but run-of-the-mill feat by trekking to Mount Everest’s Base Camp as part of their Global Encounter world adventure.
They are using the DeLorme inReach to stay connected with their friends, family, and followers so check out their Twitter feed and Facebook wall for the latest messages from Toby and David.

Follow them as they hike down from 17,000 feet and send Toby a belated Happy Birthday – he turned 30 the day they made it into camp.
Congratulations to both of them, it’s been inspiring watching their world travels. I can’t wait to follow along on their next big adventure!

Two friends of mine are leaving this friday for a trek to Mera Peak in Nepal. They will bring an InReach device paired to a PN-60w and I am desperately trying to provide them with a map of this area to load on the PN-60. Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks. JB
JB – Have them use Topo North America to add DeLorme World Base Map 7 topographic data for Nepal onto their PN-60w. They can also choose to include Digital Globe aerial imagery for the climb, that option is in the NetLink tab for Topo as well. We’ve had lots of people prepare for big adventures using these map types. I think your friends will find them very useful.

My son and three fellow climbers are currently climbing Mt Kilamenjaro, was not aware that one of them had your communication system with them, is there anyway to contact them or to see where they are? Thanks
The world has become such a small place nowadays, and very accessible. I would like to promote Nepal’s advances in technology, In October 2010 it was possible to use your standard mobile phone at Everest base camp. The routes up to and around the Everest region are fantastic, and of course they have dead spots for using your mobile phone, and they do not cover all the areas.
Be prepared, and trek sensibly and in the right season Everest base camp is a total fantastic opportunity for everyone. It is not outrageously expensive, and they have fantastic support along the trekking routes.
I am now proud a owner of a inReach and will be using it while i continue my solo world tour on my motorbike, now with the added security of being able to go into more remote areas, which before were not sensibly possible as a solo rider.
