I love my job. I’m sorry, but that’s where I have to start this post. I am currently sitting on an airplane, flying to LAX to start a trip to Lone Pine, California, where I will join five other climbers for a three day hike to the summit of Mt Langley. I’m slightly cramped because my fly rod is at my feet and my backpack is full of video camera gear, but I’m not complaining! The person sitting next to me is actually a little nervous because I haven’t stopped smiling since I boarded the plane. You see, my wife and I are just getting back into day hikes now that our two-year old has her first backpack and runs around yelling, “Let’s go hikin’ dadda!” You can imagine how much fun it was for us to dig out all of our backpacking gear and prepare for my first 14,000 foot climb—there aren’t very many of those back on the east coast. Now take that excitement to the next level because I’ll be joining the editors for Backpacker Magazine, the source for all my reading material when I was running around with my first backpack! As you can imagine, I’m a bit of a gear junkie and BP Magazine’s Gear Guide was The Source for all of my “go lightweight” research way back when…

Topo North America 9.0 – Maps for Canada
July 8, 2010Team DeLorme is headed to Nova Scotia for the Maritime Geobash 2010 (GC1P585) event this Saturday. I’ll be giving a talk about DeLorme’s new products at 12:30 should any of you be in the area. I thought I’d post some of the slides here since we are very pleased to be offering three different map types for use in Canada now and I haven’t had a chance to show them off yet. Below you will find our new topographic maps for Canada along with 1:50K Canada Topographic Map Sheets and 60 centimeter Digital Globe Aerial Imagery. The combination of the three really does a nice job of delivering a map for any occasion!

Demo the PN-60w & SPOT Satellite Communicator at GeoWoodstock VIII!
June 29, 2010For those of you starting the journey to Carnation, Washington, I wanted to make sure you know that DeLorme is the Official GPS Sponsor of GeoWoodstock VIII! We’ll soon be heading to the hub of geocaching in the US to get ready for the big event. We’re very excited to be showing off the new Earthmate PN-60w & SPOT Satellite Communicator. You’ll be able to follow all of our GPS activities at our GeoWoodstock VIII – SPOT Shared Page, where our message locations will appear along with messages created by people trying out the devices for the first time.
I’ll be giving a talk on DeLorme’s new GPS device and our partnership with SPOT, showing off the new geocaching features in Topo North America 9.0 and on the PN-60w’s SPOT Communicator Page, and answering any questions that current and potential DeLorme customers might have.
Here’s a sneak peek at our new Geocaching feature for Topo North America 9.0—the ability to synchronize all of your Pocket Queries with the Topo software and the GPS device, all with a single click of the Sync button! I have the Auto Sync option enabled so all I have to do is plug the GPS device in and wait for the progress bar to let me know the sync is complete.

Cycling with the PN-60 and SPOT
June 17, 2010Team DeLorme will be riding the Trek Across Maine this weekend, a three day – 180 mile bike ride from the Sunday River Ski Resort in Bethel, ME to the coastal town of Belfast.
I will be testing the limits of my GPS knowledge, my cycling skill, and my marriage… you see, I bought a tandem bicycle for our sixth run from Sunday River to the sea. My wife, who patiently waits for me to run all of my GPS tests, will now be trapped on the same bicycle with me! We’ve added to the excitement by picking up our new ride just yesterday so neither of us have actually ridden a tandem before… not even our dog Beezy, although she had some suggestions.
Fortunately we’ll have our Earthmate PN-60w & SPOT Communicator with us to make sure we don’t get lost.
Although I’m not sure I want to see the new profile information as we approach the big hill in the middle of day one in Weld!
I’ll have full trip statistics with me so that I can keep track of how far it is to the finish!
For those of you looking to follow along, you’ll be able to track our progress on this three day ride… complete with Type & Send messages giving updates on how things are going… Note that there are no messages on the site yet since we don’t start riding until tomorrow morning.
